Featuring the Tremor Cycle by Ryan Mark

Today I'm delighted to be bringing you a special post on the Tremor Cycle, a YA distopian series that takes place in a world devastated by war, written by Ryan Mark. With the first book (Tremor) having been published in 2014, Fracture was published in October this year.

 Ryan lives in the rural county of Cumbria on the outskirts of the Lake District and has worked within the education sector for several years, with his most recent position being in a pre-school, caring for children before they take their first big leap into primary school. You can connect with him on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads and his website!
Whilst I haven’t yet had a chance to read Fracture, although I’m very much looking forward to doing so, I really enjoyed Tremor. It was one of the first books I reviewed on this blog and, as I said then highly recommend it as a book which is jam-packed with many twists and turns. I also loved Ryan Mark’s style of writing and all of this combined leaves me with no doubt that it will appeal to a wide audience.

As part of this feature post I was very lucky to be given the opportunity to interview Branimir - a very memorable character who the reader first meets in Tremor. 

What do you think it takes to be a good leader?
What a fantastic question, I applaud you on it! There are many qualities that make a good leader, such as honesty, confidence, the ability to delegate, but above all, you must be kind to your people, they must trust you, and through this you’ll instill inspiration. 

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement? 
By the beard, the establishment of The Haven Development of course! We rose through the destruction of the Fossil War to create hope and stability for the survivors, to give them a future. 

What is your greatest fear?
To see my people suffer. 

What is your motto?
Help those that are less fortunate than you, it’s the human thing to do!

What is the trait you most deplore in others?
I despise those who are selfish, those who think of nothing but themselves, showing blatant disregard to all others. 

How would you describe yourself to someone who didn’t know you in less than 20 words
I’m a big bearded old fool who wants to make this world a better place.

When you were a child what was your ambition, what did you want to do with your life?
I wanted to be a wrestler, an astronaut, a policeman, a fireman, a kick boxer, the usual stuff really!

How do you gain people’s trust?
I listen to them, no matter how small they may think the problem might be, I will listen.

You are responsible for establishing the Haven, but what made you want to do so and how did you feel it would contribute to society? 
The world we knew had gone, there wasn’t much left after the Fossil War. Every survivor had been displaced and no one in this country had a place to call home anymore. I realised people needed hope, needed something to look towards, something to make the future look less bleak and so Haven was born out of that realisation. I dearly hope I’ve provided people with a sense of safety in the form of a new home. It is the stepping-stone towards rebuilding society, and in a sense, humanity. 

Do you have a particular weakness. If so what is it?
Don’t we all? Weaknesses make us human, it’s part of our nature, but I wouldn’t like to name them. 

How do you keep yourself so calm in the face of adversity?
Deep breathing and some biscuits. There’s a lady in Haven’s Hollow who can make some fantastic oatcakes. These calm me when I’m faced with hardships. I also seek the counsel of my brethren, the other members of the Haven Development, as together we can achieve greatness. 

 Generally speaking, are you ever fearful of the future - do you look towards it with optimism or pessimism and why?
It would be a lie to say I am not fearful of what is to come, but I shan't dwell on this. We shall face it when it comes, well if it comes, and we'll all face it together. In my eyes, I feel the future is bright and though there may be further hardships awaiting us, we will get through. We are Haven. We are the future.
